The Child Dental Benefits Schedule In A Nutshell

January 2014 marks the advent of a new dental and oral health scheme that replaces the Medicare Teen Dental Plan. This year, the Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CBDS) commences on providing financial support for basic dental health care services so as to help eligible families keep kids smiling as they grow up. With this, proper dental and oral care is made more accessible to around 3.4 million children aged 2 to 17 years.

Basically, the scheme gives you a total benefit entitlement cap of $1013 per child, over a two year calendar period. Putting things into perspective, this can significantly boost your children’s chances of having perfectly beautiful and absolutely healthy smiles.

Some Details On Eligibility

Eligibility of children to the Child Dental Benefits Schedule is evaluated by the Department Of Human Services at the start of every calendar year. Once done, they notify the families of those who are eligible. In essence, eligible children are those who are aged between 2 to 17 years at any point in the calendar year and whose families receive Family Tax Benefit

Part A or any of the following:

• Youth Allowance

• ABSTUDY

• Disability Support Pension

• Parenting Payment

• Special Benefit

• Carer Payment

• Double Orphan Pension

• Veteran’s Children Education Scheme, if the child is 16 or over

• Military Rehabilitation and Compensation Act Education and Training Scheme, if the child is 16 or over

Eligible children stay eligible for that entire calendar year even if they are just turning 2 that year, turn 18 later the year, or has stopped receiving the relevant government pay or benefit.

Using The $1000 Benefit Cap

The CBDS covers a wide range of dental services which includes regular dental checkups, x-rays, professional dental cleaning, fissure sealants, tooth fillings, root canal treatments, and partial dentures, among others. It should be noted though that most of these dental treatments have their own claiming restrictions. Also, the benefits are not provided for orthodontic and cosmetic dental treatments.

Any remaining balance at the end of a relevant two year calendar period cannot be used for services which are provided outside the period at hand. Also, family members cannot share their entitlements. The benefit cap can only be used for services undergone by that patient.

A new benefit cap will only be available if the relevant two year calendar period has already elapsed and the child is eligible in the following year.
